Basic Function

The Track Supervisor provides first-line supervision of assigned maintenance personnel and oversees the track maintenance functions ensuring the highest standards are maintained.  Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

  • Provides primary managerial direction and performs personnel administrative functions of direct report staff (e.g. training, supervising, work assignments, timesheets, performance evaluations, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining necessary staffing, enhancing productivity of staff and ensuring necessary department outcomes are achieved.
  • Observes and provides guidance on equipment and material installations, tests on equipment and material, reports any noted deficiencies.
  • Leads ongoing training and certification activities.
  • Assists in the development and revision of inspection and preventive maintenance programs, Standard Operating Procedures, safety procedures and work rules.
  • Works with staff and vendors to ensure adequate spare parts, tools and other necessary equipment is on hand for work crews to support revenue operations.
  • Completes ongoing vendor training on systems equipment and maintenance procedures as well as METRO training associated with safety and technical subjects.
  • Provides coordination of “red-tag” field activities.
  • Maintains, updates, audits and supervises inspection, maintenance activities, and professional qualification system programs.
  • Completes assessment of track and structures for possible defects, make repairs as required, record and report findings to Chief Track Maintenance.
  • Completes track alignment surveys using modern survey equipment.
  • Performs troubleshooting, inspection, testing, modification, maintenance and repair of track components.
  • Inspects, repairs and maintains mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Completes, assigns and verifies inspections and repairs.  Records and documents maintenance and diagnostic data.
  • Prioritizes emergency and routine maintenance tasks.
  • Assists other Operations groups and divisions as necessary to ensure safe and reliable service.
  • Provides contractor field oversight.
  • Acts as Chief Track Maintenance during absences.  
  • Participates in accident investigation teams and recommends corrective actions as necessary.
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Promotes safety awareness and other employee safety procedures in efforts to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
     

Education Requirement

High school diploma or equivalent is required.  Additional technical training courses preferred.

Years & Experience Required

Minimum five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in track maintenance, track construction, railroad machine operation, track welding and railroad experience.  Must include lead/supervisory experience.  Experience with transit system (track) and tools is mandatory. 
 

Knowledge & Skills Required

Possession of or ability to obtain within 6 months a Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement; must meet METRO’s requirements regarding motor vehicle records.   Good (verbal and written) communications skills.  Able to interpret civil design drawings.  Ability to communicate well with management, consultants, maintainers and engineers to resolve maintenance issues.   Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
