Basic Function

Supports Operations Maintenance training and METRO’s bus fleet through technical, mechanical and diagnostic software utilized for advanced and accurate electronic engine, hybrid and related bus equipment diagnosis and repair. Responsible for the issuance and transfer of diagnostic laptops and current software, troubleshoots technical issues and trains maintenance personnel on use. Delivers training to include onboarding, use of the technology, and selected maintenance topics. Stays abreast of industry trends and new technologies. Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

  • Troubleshoots problematic issues related to diagnostic laptop software and/or related hardware interfaces. This occurs on-site at the various garages, and at various hours given Maintenance delivers service 24/7.
  • Provides training in the use of various diagnostic software packages and related hardware interfaces to bus maintenance personnel. This training could be as a group and/or one-on-one.
  • Uploads content, schedules training, assists with Smith System and New Hire Training, produces reports and maintains training records for all maintenance personnel within the Learning Management System.
  • Liaises with IT in the maintenance of diagnostic software license renewals on laptops.
  • Coordinates the replacement of diagnostic laptops due to physical damage, a hard-drive crash, upgrades and requested laptop increases by BOF’s and Support Vehicle management.
  • Attends technology training in the areas of Powertrain, Multiplex Systems, HVAC, Hybrid Propulsion, ABS/Traction Control, E-Stroke, GM GDS2, Ford IDS, etc.  Delivers this training to maintenance personnel.
  • Conducts classroom and shop instruction to METRO maintenance employees as required.
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education Requirement

High school diploma or GED is required.  Associate degree in Electronic Technology or related degree is preferred.

Years & Experience Required

Minimum five (5) years’ experience in the use of vehicle or bus maintenance diagnostic software.  Experience with troubleshooting Hybrid Electric Vehicle/Hybrid bus technology is required.  Classroom training experience and experience in the transit industry is preferred.

Knowledge & Skills Required

A valid Texas Driver’s license is required and must meet METRO’s motor vehicle records requirements. Ability to learn and support new and rapidly changing technologies. Ability to research solutions or information regarding technical issues. Broad understanding and knowledge of transit bus applications and maintenance.  Strong knowledge in electronic engine and transmission controls, ABS brake systems and the various multiplex systems used on the bus fleets.  General knowledge of the ASE Automotive Service Excellence program.  Strong working knowledge of PC’s and related software.
