Basic Function

Functions as Graduate Engineer in providing engineering support for project management and design development of transit projects related to the light rail lines, park & rides, bus shelters and facility upgrades. Will assist Program Managers in the development of design documents, technical reports, cost estimates and schedules. Interacts with the City of Houston, Harris County and the governmental entities and agencies within METRO’s region as well as other METRO Departments. Responsibilities include engineering design and assisting with coordination and monitoring of projects.  Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.
 

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

  • Conducts engineering investigations and evaluations.
  • Provides technical assistance and basic engineering design during the development of conceptual designs. 
  • Performs basic engineering design and prepares drawings and other documents for minor detail design. 
  • Assists in the coordination of detail design work.  Provides minor technical direction to in-house staff, consultants, and sub consultants. 
  • Participates in the coordination between departments/division (Construction, Contracts, etc.) through all project phases. 
  • Prepares technical documentation and final reports covering various aspects of projects. 
  • Assists in the development of scope of work, schedules and budgets for various engineering and construction projects. 
  • Assists with the outside agency coordination and communication on all project activities. 
  • Assists in contract negotiations. 
  • Assists with interdepartmental review of milestones submitted. 
  • Monitors budget costs and schedules. 
  • Participates in interdepartmental and outside agency meetings.
  • Participates in the identification, initiation and representation of transit facilities, rail, and roadway projects. Assists in the preparation of proposals regarding these projects. 
  • May be required to make presentations at interdepartmental and community meetings. 
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education Requirement

Bachelor’ degree in Engineering or related field is required.

Years & Experience Required

Minimum 0-2 years of related experience in the design and development of construction projects preferred. 

Knowledge & Skills Required

Engineer-In-Training (EIT) License or ability to attain within Six (6) months of hire. Knowledgeable of computer aided drafting and design systems. Experience with MicroStation software, Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).   Must have a willingness to work on a variety of projects with a strong desire to learn, be motivated and enthusiastic about all aspects of the role, and enjoy the challenge of taking on new responsibilities.
