Network Support Specialist II

Basic Function

Performs intermediate level support of METRO’s network infrastructure equipment including installation, configuration, monitoring, and testing.  Researches and troubleshoots complex technical problems.  Manages assigned work orders.  Provides on-call support on nights and weekends as needed.  Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

  • Applies intermediate level knowledge of network architecture design and topologies for fiber optics, ethernet and wireless networks.
  • Applies intermediate level knowledge of network troubleshooting and ability to configure network equipment.
  • Applies intermediate level knowledge of Layer2 routing, VLANs and SVIs.
  • Applies intermediate knowledge of network tools including Solarwinds Orion, Cisco DNAC and Cisco ISE.
  • Applies intermediate level knowledge of network security, including NAC and Palo Alto firewalls.
  • Conducts various tests to identify and solve networking problems using various testing equipment, to include Network AutoTesters, packet sniffers, digital multi-meters, tone generators, etc.
  • Performs network diagnostics using diagnostic hardware and software tools.
  • Assists in designing network architecture plans for both wired and wireless networks.
  • Provides intermediate support for technology systems on vehicles, buses and LRVs.
  • Performs analytic services for end users and departments.
  • Interacts with vendors in support of network troubleshooting & repairs.
  • Provides on-call support on nights and weekends as needed.
  • Works with senior staff to help develop advanced technical documentation for all systems.
  • Relies on experience and judgment to perform job functions. A great degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Requirement

High School Diploma or GED is required.  Associates degree in a related field, or combination of equivalent education, certifications and relative experience. 

Years & Experience Required

Minimum of three (3) years of experience in networking, design & troubleshooting.  Intermediate knowledge of network installation, troubleshooting and configuration; intermediate knowledge of Cisco networking, including CISCO DNAC and ISE; advanced knowledge of testing networking problems using various testing equipment, to include, Network AutoTesters, packet sniffers, digital multi-meters, tone generators, etc.

Knowledge & Skills Required

Ability to apply technical understanding to technical solutions.  Excellent customer service and organizational skills, with good interpersonal and communication skills. Strong oral and written communication skills.  One or more certifications preferred: Cisco CCNA, Cisco CCNP, Palo Alto PCNSA, Palo Alto PCNSE.
