Basic Function

Supervises and instructs mechanics, utility workers and cleaners in the repair, cleaning and reconditioning of buses.  Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

  • Responsible for the supervision of mechanics, utility workers and cleaners and for the daily repair, cleaning and reconditioning of buses.
  • Supervises and instructs mechanics, utility workers and cleaners in the repair, servicing and reconditioning of buses in assigned area.
  • Provides technical assistance to personnel as necessary to assure quality and timely repairs.
  • Coordinates upgrades, training and training schedule with General Foreman and Superintendent.
  • Coordinates work flow from work area to work area.
  • Responsible for all personnel and general administrative matters i.e., first step grievances, performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, payroll issues, etc.
  • Maintains records of work performed and daily overtime, and absenteeism.
  • Supervises maintenance and repair equipment, inspects tools and equipment for condition and proper use.
  • Responsible for meeting equipment service demands in a timely manner.
  • Ensures and maintains quality and safety standards.
  • Researches pertinent bus performance information and analyzes data to determine bus down issues.
  • Coordinates activities with Storeroom.
  • Maintains yard control.
  • Dispatches wreckers/T-Trucks/tire trucks for break down recovery and on street repairs.
  • Keeps Superintendent and General Foreman informed on all matters of importance.
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned. 

Education Requirement

High school diploma or equivalent.  Additional vocational/training in heavy duty vehicle maintenance and supplementary training in body repair, transmissions, welding, electrical and/or air conditioning preferred.

Years & Experience Required

Minimum of five (5) years extensive vehicle maintenance experience in the automotive, truck, military, or bus industry. Two (2) years previous lead/supervisory experience is required.  Supervisory experience in a mechanical maintenance/shop environment is preferred.

Knowledge & Skills Required

Good communications (written/verbal) and interpersonal skills. Good decision making and organizational skills.  General knowledge and use of part books and maintenance manuals.  Familiar with labor relations/union agreements and related procedures.  Basic knowledge of personal computers and related software.  A valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License with a “P” passenger endorsement is required for the job and must meet METRO’s requirements regarding motor vehicle records.  The ability to drive any Authority owned vehicle.  Able to maintain or obtain additional certifications/licenses as required.  Applicant must successfully pass a reading, math, and mechanical assessment prior to interview.
