Basic Function

Assists the Manager, Maintenance Training in the development and administration of all Maintenance training programs.  Coordinates with all METRO Bus Operating locations to identify training needs, and provides hands-on, computer based, and/or classroom training. Works closely with the Quality Assurance and Technical Services groups to ensure new bus vendor training is scheduled per the requirements of the contract.  Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with applicable rules and safety procedures.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

  • Establishes and maintains the Maintenance Training programs for METRO bus maintenance personnel. 
  • Conducts specialized classroom, and shop instruction to METRO maintenance employees.
  • Establishes goals and objectives for the Maintenance Training group.
  • Coordinates training programs for supervisory, Quality Assurance and Technical Services personnel to improve skills in their respective positions.
  • Evaluates and reviews the technical requirements of METRO’s Bus Maintenance Department based on employee skill sets and fleet performance trends.  
  • Prepares and presents reports regarding the progress in Maintenance Training.
  • Coordinates vendor and custom in-house training on current bus fleet, new technologies and internal maintenance SOPs to all newly hired and existing bus repair personnel.
  • Attends internal and external self-development courses to improve training development skills.  
  • Maintains records for all bus maintenance employee certifications, tests and related documents within the Metro learning management system.
  • Assists with the required administrative tasks and instruction relative to the Harris County and Non-County Bus Repair C Mechanic Apprenticeship Training Program.   
  • Acquires and develops textbooks, handouts, training aids and materials for all employees attending training.
  • Assists with revisions to training presentations, LMS courses and lab tasks utilizing the latest technologies, e.g., artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, and simulations. 
  • Performs periodic tool/equipment audits of all training department shop tools and equipment. 
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Applies SMS (Safety Management System) methods and principles in daily routine and supports all aspects of the agency’s Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

 

Pay Range:  $68,800 - $89,300

Education Requirement

High school diploma or GED is required. Associate degree is preferred.

Years & Experience Required

Minimum of four (4) years of transit mechanical experience.  Additionally, a minimum of five (5) years of training experience in heavy vehicles is preferred.

Knowledge & Skills Required

Must have a solid administrative understanding of the (ASE) Automotive Service Excellence program.  Requires a broad understanding and knowledge of transit bus or heavy truck applications relative to training. The ability to train large groups in a classroom environment is critical.  Must have a strong understanding of METRO Transit Operations or related industry.  Strong communications (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills to effectively work with all levels of management and field employees. Must have working knowledge of PC’s and related software.  The following ASE certifications are preferred:

 -  ASE Transit Bus: Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical, and  Diesel Engines, or
 -  ASE Heavy Truck: Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical, and Diesel Engines.
