Graduate Engineer, Transportation Systems

Basic Function
Functions as a Graduate Engineer in providing engineering support for design, implementation, and project management of transit signal projects related to METRORapid (BRT), BOOST, and/or other transit corridors. Assists in the development of operational parameters, design documents, technical reports, and schedules. Assists with ongoing operations of signaling systems. Interacts with the City of Houston, Harris County, and other government entities and agencies within METRO’s region as well as other METRO departments. Responsibilities include engineering design and assisting with coordination and monitoring of projects. Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.
Responsibilities and Specific Duties
- Provides engineering support for analysis, design, and modification of transit signal operations with engineering work performed using any combination of METRO in-house and/or external resources.
- Conducts engineering investigations and evaluations.
- Evaluates operations of existing system and makes recommendations for improvements.
- Provides technical assistance and basic engineering design during the development of conceptual designs.
- Performs basic engineering design and prepares drawings and other documents for minor detail design.
- Assists in the coordination of detail design work. Provides minor technical direction to consultants and sub consultants.
- Participates in the coordination between METRO departments/division through all project phases.
- Maintains relationships with municipalities and other government entities, including but not limited to TxDOT, HCTRA, and the City of Houston. Cooperates on joint projects and/or advance needs related to METRO projects.
- Assists with outside agency coordination and communication on all project activities.
- Prepares technical documentation and final reports covering various aspects of projects.
- Assists with interdepartmental review of milestones submitted.
- Assists in developing operating and capital budgets. Monitors budget costs and schedules.
- Participates in interdepartmental meetings and outside agency meetings.
- Participates in the identification, initiation, and representation of transit signaling projects. Assists in the preparation regarding these projects.
- Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
- Applies SMS (Safety Management System) methods and principles in daily routine and supports all aspects of the agency’s Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).
- Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Education Requirement
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field is required.
Years & Experience Required
Minimum 0 to 2 years related experience related to transit signal operations, analysis, and/or design.
Knowledge & Skills Required
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) license or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. Strong communications (written/verbal) skills. Knowledgeable of computer aided drafting and design systems. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
