Basic Function

Under the guidance of the Senior GIS Specialist, the GIS Data Support Analyst will assist in maintaining and updating the electronic bus schedule GIS data layers (route patterns, bus stops, and special points) in a timely fashion, updating the Centerline GIS Street Base Map, ensuring complete and accurate coding of spatial data (Trapeze software) for integration into the downstream technology systems (IVOMS, CIC, Web Planner, Q-Card, and others).  Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

  • Assists with the Bus Stop Inventory including capturing accurate bus stop locations and attributes, using portable Global Positioning System (GPS) technology in the field and coding descriptive information including unique bus stop ID, available amenities, and other physical attributes. 
  • Verifies updates through coordination with Bus Transportation and Facility Maintenance and helps to maintain GIS electronic database of METRO bus stop locations, amenities and history for roughly 10,000 bus stops.
  • Assists in importing GIS bus stop data, Centerline GIS Street Base Map, maintaining bus route spatial attributes at a route pattern level, and working with the sequencing of bus stops along each bus route pattern for Trapeze FX.  
  • Uses data interface tools to export required information to IVOMS and for use in GIS.  
  • Performs necessary data integrity checks for Trapeze FX under supervision.
  • Applies in-house GIS tools to create bus stop announcements and transit signal priority (TSP) using precise coding of schedule and spatial data and accurate field measures of ridership and bus stop locations. 
  • Helps maintain Centerline GIS Street base map for use in GIS, Trapeze, IVOMS and other technology systems.  
  • Assists with imports of base map data layers provided by Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC).  
  • Works to ensure geographic and attribute accuracy for map layers including highways, streets, capital facilities, and service area boundaries as well as biannual complete base map updates.
  • Works with GIS procedures to plot ridership profiles and service reliability information on base maps and participates in developing PowerPoint presentations and other visual aids.
  • Prepares maps as well as other GIS data for special projects.
  •  Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education Requirement

High school diploma or GED is required.  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in geographic information systems (GIS), Geography, urban and regional planning, or related degree is preferred.

Years & Experience Required

Minimum of three (3) years of hands-on experience with ArcInfo or other GIS systems including automation is required.

Knowledge & Skills Required

Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.  Strong Microsoft suite application skills.  Necessary aptitudes include the capture, storage and analysis of geographic data as it relates to public transportation. The use of GIS for data analysis and map production is required.  ESRI GIS certification is preferred.  Working knowledge of Trapeze Scheduling system is preferred.
