Description: 

Basic Function

Professional learning experience where an undergraduate or graduate student gains practical work experience, organization knowledge, and business acumen related to the field of Finance in METRO’s Office of Management & Budget. Internships begin with orientation in June and conclude in early August. Specific duties vary depending on the assigned department and business need.  Position will work 32 hours per week. Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with applicable rules and safety procedures.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

  • Reviews and updates written procedures for OMB Operating Analyst (Shopping Carts, PO Changes, BoardVantage, BCR’s, etc…).
  • Attends meetings with the Direct Supervisors to gain experience of how these meetings can run and what it looks like for an OMB Analyst or Business Professional.
  • Reviews METRO’s Diesel Fuel and Gasoline variances over multiple years to see if we have been over/under on consumption or price.
  • Reviews accruals against actual expenses for larger departments. Reviews and Analyzes Authority headcount on Union and NonUnion to see how it has grown versus Service. 
  • Reviews Police Office headcount versus number of security incidents.
  • Reviews age of METRO’s fleet and experience of Mechanics and Mean Distance Between Failure.
  • Reviews how agencies across the nation are handling First Mile/Last Mile by using Micro Transit and TNC (Transportation Network Companies/Uber/Lyft) and how METRO is planning on increasing this service.
  • Reviews METRO’s Solar Plan and Energy Storage.
  • Performs a study on how changing demographic in the 9-county Houston metro area may impact ridership and solutions and what modes may be best suited for solutions.
  • Contributes to departmental goals and objectives.
  • Contributes to a team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Applies SMS (Safety Management System) methods and principles in daily routine and supports all aspects of the agency’s Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

       Pay Rate: $20 per hour

Education Requirement

Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program or a recent graduate (within 1 year).
Degree program relative to intern assignments, such as Finance, Economics, Business, or related degree. 
 

Years & Experience Required

Currently enrolled in an accredited education institution and have successfully completed 24 credit hours. 
GPA of 2.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale
 

Knowledge & Skills Required

Knowledge relative to intern assignments, such as Finance, Economics, Business, or related degree. Knowledge of PC and related software; MS Office.
