Basic Function

Professional learning experience in Law where an undergraduate or graduate student participant gains practical work experience, organization knowledge and business acumen related to a student’s field of study or career interest. Internships begin with orientation in June and conclude in early August. Specific duties vary depending on the assigned department and business need.  Position will work 15 hours per week.  Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

Assignments may include responsibilities in one or more of the following areas:

  • Assists Attorneys with preparation of legal documents and interlocal agreements.
  • Reviews contracts, employment cases, and personal injury lawsuits, labor, or contract disputes. 
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations through legal research. 
  • Assists Attorneys with drafting legal opinions, advice, and counsel to the Board of Directors and to METRO management.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and discretion in all aspects of client representation.
  • Assists legal staff with filing court papers, correspondence, and pleadings.
  • Attends trials, hearings, Board and committee meetings, and staff meetings.
  • Contributing to departmental goals and objectives   
  • Suggests solutions to business issues and challenges
  • Attends and participates in meetings
  • Assists in functional and/or business analytics
  • Gathers and scrubs data for analysis and reports
  • Assists with client consulting and support
  • Assists with writing grants, procedures guide, presentations, training materials, etc.
  • Contributes in a team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education Requirement

Enrolled in a law/Juris Doctorate program from an American Bar Association accredited law school and completion of the first year of program. 

Years & Experience Required

Currently enrolled in an accredited education institution and have successfully completed 24 credit hours.  GPA of 2.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Knowledge & Skills Required

Degree program relative to intern assignment; such as Finance, Business, Marketing, etc.
