College Intern - Finance (General Mobility & Performance Analysis)

Basic Function
Assists in analyzing ridership behavior and identifying strategies to recover lost revenue for our public transit agency. This internship provides hands-on experience in data analytics, problem-solving, and the application of data-driven insights to real-world challenges. The intern will work closely with the Finance team to support evidence-based decision-making. Internships begin with orientation in June and conclude in early August. Position will work 20 hours per week. Specific duties vary depending on the assigned department and business need. Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with applicable rules and safety procedures.
Responsibilities and Specific Duties
- Compares pre-pandemic and post-pandemic ridership and revenue data.
- Assesses the impact of remote work trends on revenue.
- Develops data-driven recommendations for promotional campaigns.
- Collects, cleans, and analyzes ridership data from various sources, including ticketing systems, surveys, and operational metrics.
- Identifies trends and shifts in ridership behavior by comparing pre- and post-pandemic data (or other relevant time periods).
- Develops visualizations, dashboards, and reports to communicate findings effectively to stakeholders.
- Conducts root cause analysis to determine factors contributing to revenue losses, such as changes in travel patterns, fare evasion, or service modifications.
- Researches and proposes innovative strategies for increasing ridership and recovering lost revenue.
- Collaborates with cross-departmental teams to validate findings and refine recommendations.
- Presents a final report and actionable recommendations to senior leadership at the end of the internship.
- Attends and participates in meetings.
- Contributes to a team-oriented atmosphere.
- Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
- Applies SMS (Safety Management System) methods and principles in daily routine and supports all aspects of the agency’s Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).
- Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Pay Rate: $20 hr
Education Requirement
Enrolled in a graduate program or a recent graduate (within 1 year). Degree program relative to intern assignments, such as Data Science, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Statistics, or related degree.
Years & Experience Required
Currently enrolled in an accredited education institution and have successfully completed 24 credit hours.
GPA of 2.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Knowledge & Skills Required
Knowledge relative to intern assignments, such Data Science, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Statistics, or related degree; Knowledge of PC’s and related software; MS Office.
