Basic Function

The Certified Structural Welder/Fabricator applies extensive welding skills in fabricating or repairing parts consisting of specialty metals or other weldable materials on METRO vehicles or equipment as specified by work orders, blue prints, sketches or charts.  Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties
  • Independently diagnoses and repairs body and structural damage on METRO operated vehicles and support equipment, utilizing a variety of welding techniques, processes and equipment.  May work from layouts, blueprints, work orders or verbal instructions.
  • Proficient use of all specialized tools and equipment associated with body work and all types of welding.
  • Fabricates assemblies and structures as required.
  • Performs all phases of welding, cutting, gouging and sheet metal fabricating techniques.
  • Ensures the completion of quality repairs on all work performed.
  • May perform the duties of Body Repair A classification as assigned.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work area.
  • Completes all required reports and records in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education Requirement

High school diploma or equivalent.  Additional vocational/technical welding courses.  

Years & Experience Required

Minimum six (6) years extensive welding experience in specialized metals and various areas including but not limited to arc, mig, gas, etc.  General heavy duty mechanical experience preferred. Thorough knowledge of all metal welding fabricating techniques, processes and procedures.  

Knowledge & Skills Required

A valid Texas Commercial Drivers’ license is required and must meet METRO’s requirements regarding motor vehicles records.  A valid welding certification is required. Capable of effective verbal and written communication. Must be able to complete/fill out written records, reports and forms. Ability to read work from layouts, blueprints, work orders, charts, etc. Must maintain a full set of hand tools.  Ability to maintain or obtain licensing and certifications as required.
