Bus Mechanic Trainee (Entry-Level)

Basic Function
Upon successful completion of the Bus Repair C Maintenance Training Program, the Bus Mechanic Trainee is responsible for assisting as directed, in the diagnosis and repair of all defects on METRO revenue vehicles. Must be able to make repairs and adjustments of components or systems and show a proficient knowledge and use of equipment or specialized tools common to the Transit Bus Repair “C” classification. Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.
Responsibilities and Specific Duties
- Successfully complete the Bus Repair C Maintenance Training Program (BRCMTP).
- Successfully obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Transit Bus Certificate H4 Brakes as required in the BRCMTP.
- Successfully obtain ASE Transit Bus Certificate H5 Suspension & Steering within 12 months after successful completion of the BRCMTP.
- Assists with diagnosing, testing and repairing all defects on METRO’s revenue vehicle fleet under the supervision of the Mechanical Foreman.
- Assists with Preventive Maintenance Inspections (PMI).
- Maintains work area appearance and safety.
- Completes all required reports and records in a timely and accurate fashion.
- Performs all work in accordance with quality standards and established safety procedures.
- Assists other Bus Maintenance personal as assigned.
- Participates in ongoing training in accordance with METRO’s Maintenance Training Program.
- Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
- Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Education Requirement
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Graduation from a related technical school is preferred.
Years & Experience Required
General mechanic work experience and must successfully pass a reading, math and mechanical aptitude test prior to an interview.
Knowledge & Skills Required
A valid Texas Drivers’ license is required for the job and must meet METRO’s requirements regarding motor vehicle records. Must obtain a Class B CDL with “P” endorsement as part of the BRCMTP. Able to maintain or obtain additional certifications/licenses as required. Must maintain a basic set of personal hand tools to perform repairs related to classification with exception of specialized tools provided by METRO. Ability to complete written reports, records and forms. Must be able to speak, read and write English.
