Axle Counter Maintainer

Basic Function
Under general supervision performs inspections, adjustments and repairs on axle counter and associated signal equipment. Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.
Responsibilities and Specific Duties
- Inspects, repairs and maintains the axle counter system using specialized tools.
- Inspects and makes necessary axle counter head adjustments.
- Inspects axle counter mounting brackets.
- Inspects and cleans rail boot annulus and embedded track drains.
- Inspects mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment such as grade crossing mechanisms, switch machines, and relays.
- Removes water and debris from axle counter boxes and switch turnouts.
- Records and documents maintenance and diagnostic data.
- Operates tools to include speed handle/racket, air compressors, thread casher, thread taps, pry bar and chisels.
- Assists with axle counter calibration.
- Provides variable shift coverage to accommodate maintenance assignments during peak, off-peak and non-revenue hours.
- Works with staff and vendors to assure adequate spare parts, tools and other necessary equipment is on hand to support revenue operations.
- Prioritizes emergency maintenance tasks in the absence of on-site supervision.
- Works closely with peers, management and contractors to assure a safe, reliable and efficient light rail operation.
- Provides on-call availability for emergency repairs and unscheduled incidents.
- May serve as a “fill-in” Technician in the absence of the Signals and Communications Technician.
- Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
- Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Education Requirement
High school diploma or GED is required.
Years & Experience Required
Minimum two (2) years’ experience in performing inspection and general maintenance work. Experience in a rail/track maintenance environment preferred.
Knowledge & Skills Required
Good communications (verbal/written) skills are essential to resolve maintenance issues. Must have a Texas Class C drivers’ license and must meet Metro’s requirements regarding motor vehicle records. Must have knowledge of all tools and equipment required to perform the job.
