Basic Function

The Alternative Service Vehicle Mechanic (ASV) must have a thorough knowledge of all components of METRO's alternative service vehicles and their proper function as required for job classification. The Alternative Service Mechanic (ASV) must show a proficient knowledge and use of equipment and specialized tools related to classification requirements and must independently service, diagnose and troubleshoot defects on METRO’s Alternative Service Vehicle fleets to effectively repair all defects in a timely manner.  Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

  • Performs Preventive Maintenance Inspections (PMI) on Support Vehicles and Alternative Service Vehicle fleet.
  • Inspects and/or tests and observes defective equipment for diagnosis of malfunctions applicable to automobile fleet.
  • Proper use and interpretation of handheld scan tools, laptop computer, battery/charging system analyzers and refrigerant, pneumatic and hydraulic pressure gauges.
  • Repairs and troubleshoots major components and complete assemblies.
  • Road tests vehicles when necessary to diagnose malfunctions or to verify repair.
  • Assists with repairs of wheelchair lift systems common to Paratransit vehicles.
  • Completes all required reports and records in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work area. 
  • At the discretion of the Mechanical Foreman, the Alternative Service Vehicles Mechanic will work independently or assist other Maintenance employees.
  • Participates in on-going training in accordance with METRO’s Maintenance Training Program.
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers. 
  • Applies SMS (Safety Management System) methods and principles in daily routine and supports all aspects of the agency’s Public Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.
     

Education Requirement

High school diploma or equivalent.  Graduation from a related technical school preferred.

Years & Experience Required

Minimum 3 years automotive chassis experience in the inspection and repair of light & medium duty automotive chassis.

Knowledge & Skills Required

Automotive Service Excellence Certification (ASE) required within 180 days of employment.  (METRO Provides all mechanics  
with ASE test materials, registration, and testing.)
              
Automobile A1, A2, A4, A5 – A1 Engine Repair, A2 Automatic Transmission, A4 Suspension and Steering, A5 Brakes (Required 
within 180 days of employment.)
