All METRO peace officers are licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

To become a METRO police officer, you must possess or meet the following criteria:

  • Valid TCOLE license
  • Valid Texas driver's license
  • 21 years of age or older
  • United States citizen
  • High school diploma and 30 semester hours from a TCOLE-approved college / university with a minimum GPA of 2.0; or a minimum of two (2) years of active military service with a DD-214 Honorable Discharge.
  • No felony or class A misdemeanor convictions. No class B misdemeanor convictions within ten (10) years of the date of application. No convictions of any family violence.
  • Successfully pass the Police Officer Selection Test (POST), handgun qualification, and all elements of the medical, psychological, and other pre-employment tests
  • Meet all criteria set forth in TCOLE rule 217.1, and Texas Occupational Code Section 1701.255.

The selection process takes about 60-120 days. It’s conducted in phases:

Phase 1 – Police officer selection test
Phase 2 – Handgun qualification
Phase 3 – Formal application submission
Phase 4 – Oral review board
Phase 5 – Background investigation
Phase 6 – Human Resources and other pre-employment test

If you become disqualified during any of those phases, you may be able to reapply after meeting the requirements of the selection criteria that disqualified you. These may include:

  • Age
  • Educational requirements
  • Citizenship and residency
  • Driver's license and driving history
  • Physical and mental health
  • Contradictory information
  • Credit and financial responsibility
  • Criminal behavior
  • Narcotics and alcohol usage
  • References
  • Affiliation with, or sympathy for certain organizations
